Hi! This is escape_rope, writing my very first review!
I didn't think I'd ever write one but I just couldn't pass an opportunity to share some pics and thoughts about a figure from the series I truly love: Ciel as Miss Robin from Kuroshitsuji.

But before we start I'd like you to read through a few words below:
  • If you're not familiar with the series I might spoil you a little if you read this review.
  • There's lots of pictures in this review and you can take a closer look of almost every one of them if you want to. Just click them.
  • However, my camera is far from the latest models so the quality of the pics isn't the best. Sorry.
  • My english isn't the most fluent so if you don't understand what I'm trying to say please leave a comment and I'll try to explain it better. You most likely spot some grammar mistakes too but I hope you don't mind them.
  • And most importantly, I love this figure so much that I might have over-rated it. So be critical while reading this review, okay?

..................................................................

At first let's take a look how the creator, mangaka Toboso Yana sees this character.
Like the most of us know we aren't drooling over a cute girl in beautiful dress but a 12-years old boy, Ciel Phantomhive the head of the Funtom Company and the Queen's watchdog who's dressed as a girl "Robin" against his own will. So yeah, it's definitely a trap!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/ciely_yana01.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/ciely_yana02.jpg

The dress has nice details; flowers, bows, frills and such - Not the simpliest outfit to turn into plastic.
Ciel doesn't seems to enjoy being dressed up like that but no worries Ciely! We are more than happy and pleased to see you in a girly dress like that.

So how did the figure itself turn out?
Now we know how it should look like but did we get what we expected or wanted.. Let's take a look.

SCULPTING:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/sculp01.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/sculpt02.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/sculpt03.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/sculpt04.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/sculpt05.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/sculpt06.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/sculpt07.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/sculpt08.jpg

Looks amazingly great afar but after taking a closer look you can see the sculpting is nowhere near to perfect. But let me say, if I find a little scratch or a bump on Alter's figure (for example) I feel really disappointed 'cause I expect a lot from a company like Alter. However, I can't compare Square Enix to Alter, they aren't on the same line when it comes to making completed models. That's why I could even give a credit to Enix, the outcome pleases me so much!

I'm sure the dress with the frills and all wasn't the easiest to make. However, folds and ruffles came out extremely well. The dress looks so massive, I love it! The roses on the hat are sculpted very well too, they're so detailed. The shoes don't look bad either.

I'll give minus to some seamlines though. I noticed a pretty visible one on the white hem. The hemline can be fairly rough too. And I think his hair could be sharper, especially his bangs. To be blunt they start to piss me off if I stare them too long DD:<

The hole which is for the peg gave me some trouble too. The peg couldn't fit at all so I had to make the hole bigger with... scissors. I wish I had some sandpaper.

.:PAINTING:.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/paint01.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/paint02.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/paint03.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/paint04.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/paint05.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/paint06.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/paint07.jpg

I don't think this one's for those who like their figures perfectly painted. I mean, you must tolerate a few black dots - actually many of them. The black & grey dots and scratches are basically part of this figure. I don't think mine is faulty because of them since I'm sure all copies have the same "problem". The stripes on the bow on his chest are also some what funny looking. I wish they were painted more realistically.

If I put aside the dots I find the figure nicely painted. There's some shading too, mostly on the roses, hair and his underwear.
Ciel's eyes are my favourite part of this figure, they're so well made! And you heard right: You can also see the right eye if you look the figure from right angles. Although I'm not sure if it has the demon mark.. was Enix too lazy to add the mark or not?

.:POSING:.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose01.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose02.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose03.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose04.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose05.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose06.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose07.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose08.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose09.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose10.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose11.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose12.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/pose13.jpg

We have already gotten one Robin from Square Enix (Trading Arts) with the pose that suits the character more than well. Even so I think the pose of this Static Arts one is far more superior. Moreover, I find the pose really unique in general too.

Our little Robin is sitting on the ground (or wherever you want him to sit on), tilting his head a little bit and holding his hat with the right had. The left arm supports him from falling backwards 'cause his legs don't have much ground under them. The other foot points up while the other one barely touches the ground. I wonder what happened 'cause he's wearing only one shoe.

I find the pose really elegant. The arms and hands are my personal favourites, they're so slender<3 The pose also lets the dress fall beautifully all around. Same goes to the long twintails. I think he looks great from every angle.

.:BASE:.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/base01.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/base02.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v499/alecless2/base03.jpg

The base is round, about 18,5cm in diameter so it's pretty large. However, the greatest thing in my opinnion is the fact that the base is made of clear plastic! I don't run into to bases like that too often and I was surprised they gave a clear one to Ciel.

So the base is clear but it has some text on it like bases usually do. Something Square Enix related, copyrights, "Made in China" and so as you can guess. Though the figure covers the base nearly completely so you don't actually see the text at all. There's also one peg in the middle of the base in case you want to be sure your precious Ciel won't be able slide over.

But as you might have noticed already the base isn't necessary. Ciel can be displayed very well without it as well.

.:PACKAGING:.

This is the box. I've already taken Ciel out of it so I didn't put him back - not even for a photo. Sorry about that. Mine got also a bit damaged during the shipping so there's a dent on the corner.

As you can see the box is fairly small: 21,5cm x 21,5cm x 12cm (WxDxH). And I'd say it's quite flimsy as well. It's black on the outside with some text and ornaments printed in white. The box has four big windows and the shape of the one on the top reminds me of some kind of cookie or flower. Very nice detail if you ask me.

The box is rather cute from the inside although you'll find nothing very special. The insert is plain, one-sided and dark red with some white print on it. Oh, I almost forgot the little instruction paper that shows you how to connect the figure and the base! That one is also in the box.

.:ENJOYMENT:.

Do you even have to ask? ^^" I love this figure! I'm so into this babe that I had to buy another one! Honestly speaking, I didn't pre-order the figure 'cause I wasn't impressed with the promo pics. However, I panicked when the figure sold out amazingly fast and that's why I decided to order him if I got another chance. And the chance came.. twice.

Eventhough the figure isn't perfectly sculpted or painted I really do love it. I feel like it's a must-have item in every hard-core Kuroshitsuji fan's collection xDD You shouldn't miss this pretty boy if you have the money and chance to get him! Especially if you missed the first one.

Well, there's one little thing that's bugging me a bit right now. Don't you think Robin is lonely without his handsome tutor? :3 That's right! What would make this figure even more awesome is Sebbie the tutor! I wish so hard we'll get a second figure of him too. He could be kneeling next to Robin-chan ready to help him back to his feet! Hahah, at least I can dream about it right?

Last but not least, thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed the review.

It took me a whole day but it was worth it because I got so many nice pictures and I learned something new about my camera. I might even want to write more reviews of my favourite figures in the near future, so stay tuned or something :D

Do you know how LONG I SPEND looking at a figure long enough to tell me that I'm not going to buy it then someone does a good review and I'm right back to square one >.<

But nice review and I'm glad you enjoy him!

@mikaru: If I was a mangaka I would totally be interested in figures from my own series. I find it weird if I woudn't be though I'm sure there's a lot mangakas like that :< Which means Toboso-sensei simply rocks!<3
Anyways, nice to hear you liked the review. I hope your Robin arrives very soon!

@pyoko: I almost skipped him too - Luckily I came to my senses!
I'm glad you liked my review. You probably should get both Ciel's if you like them that much :D

@ninth: Congrats getting him! I hope he arrives safe and sound!

Great review! I can sympathize with almost every comment of you ^^ And the pictures and screen shots from the manga and anime are very interesting too.

Lol Toboso-Sensei seems to like this Komadori figure too, she was promoting and supporting him several times on her blog ^^ I'm sure if she wasn't a big figure fan herself, Square Enix wouldn't have made this figure that good. I really love the Mangaka as much as I love her works.

Hehe, I can't wait mine to arrive ^^
I'm so glad that I could finally get one at AmiAmi since he was sold out for the most time after the release date!
