This is a review of a figure in an outfit that can be considered NSFW ! Proceed at own risk!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270709.jpeg

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Jason Voorhees ENTRY #17785 from Freddy vs. Jason ENTRY #73192 ! This figure ITEM #555569 is from the Horror Bishoujo ENTRY #105896 line made by Kotobukiya ENCYCLOPEDIA #7621 . The figure we're going to specifically look at today is her second version. The only difference between this one and her first release ITEM #182114 should be the base and the box.

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Jason Voorhees is a classic slasher movie killer, mainly known from the Friday the 13th franchise. Well known for his iconic hockey mask and long brown coat. This specific figure is based on the Freddy vs. Jason movie. Like a lot of 'vs.' horror movies where well known killers or monsters take it up against eachother, this specific movie was pretty subpar. I assume Kotobukiya chose this specific franchise for a collaboration, so it was also possible to release a Freddy ITEM #182113 / ITEM #555570 with the same license together.

The reason why and how I got her

Jason and Freddy were the first characters in the Horror Bishoujo line, which came in follow-up from the Movie x Bishoujo ENTRY #25366 line. As someone that likes a lot of (classic) horror movies, I was really intrigued in the pair. When the prototypes were out, I noticed the Freddy figure wasn't really doing it for me, and I had some doubts about Jason. That is why I skipped on pre-ordering either of them.

Fast forward to a couple of months after release and I saw Jason in person at a convention, where a vendor was selling her for a bit more than MRSP. I was blown away by her quality and told myself to pick her up soon. And here is where I made a mistake telling myself that instead of just buying her on the spot: like many Kotobukiya Bishoujo figures, this one was rising in aftermarket price in no time. Luckily Kotobukiya does a lot more re-releases nowadays, most of them with small differences from the first release, and when the re-release of this one was announced, I pre-ordered Jason right away. No way I was going to risk missing out on her again! Meanwhile, Freddy has still not convinced me yet, so for now I will keep it to Jason only.

Original art

Well-known artist Yamashita Shunya ENTRY #8364 does the character designs for the Kotobukiya Bishoujo line and he designed a very pretty looking Jason for us:

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270715.jpeg

I personally love how fit Jason is, those abs are amazing! The outfit is a good combination of sexy and though. Comparing it with the actual figure, we see lots of similarities. A few things different are the clothes looking less tattered on the figure and a slight chance in body build and face shape.

The Box

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270710.jpeg

Either Kotobukiya or the store where I ordered her from (Big In Japan) put some extra protective paper around the box. I appreciate it when manufacturers/stores do that.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270711.jpeg

The box of my Jason unfortunately took a hit during shipment. The cardboard of this 2nd run figure actually seems to be a bit thinner than my original release other Kotobukiya Bishoujo figures. Interestingly enough, I read something similar a while ago in a review from someone else that got the 2nd run of a in the Comics Bishoujo line (specifically, Starfire: ITEM #768379 / BLOG #42646 ). I guess Kotobukiya saves a bit of money by doing this.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270712.jpeg

The hockey mask windows on the side is nice! The box also mentions on the front and side that this is the 2nd edition of the figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270715.jpeg

A big rendering of the artwork is also on the box.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270716.jpeg

This box is sealed with one piece of round tape.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270717.jpeg

Inside the box we can see a mist effect, very fitting for Jason!

First Look

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270718.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270719.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270721.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270720.jpeg

Jason is pretty compactly placed in her blisters.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270723.jpeg

This figure comes with:
- Main figure
- Axe
- Machete
- Magnetic base

The only assembly required are putting her on the base and adding the machete and axe in her hands. Now, for adding that machete and axe...it's not a lot of fun to do.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270724.jpeg

The figure comes with no instructions whatsoever on how to do the placement. This lead to me fiddling around with both weapons for a while to see if some parts could come loose. The answer is: no, they can not come loose. So you have to forcefully put both the weapons in her hands. The machete went OK in one go, but the axe was another story. It was a lot of pushing and strength involved and I was really scared of accidentally breaking something. In the end, I ended up not damaging the figure's sculpt, but Jason got multiple paint scratches. In person this is not very visible, but on the pictures here you can see it very well: it's on her index finger and the palm of her hand.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270725.jpeg

The base is really thin and it's hard to imagine it can hold such a big figure. The base itself is quite heavy and almost completely a magnet.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270728.jpeg

The bottom of the base has the copyright markings from the movie and some flocking fabric. I assume without the flocking the base would be very slippery.

The Figure

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270729.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270730.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270732.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270731.jpeg

I had already seen the figure multiple times in person before getting my own copy, but I was still very impressed when I got her. The nice shading even stands out from a distance and this new base is so incredibly shiny!

Looking at all the details!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270733.jpeg

Yamashita Shunya is known for his gorgeous female faces and Jason is no exception. Especially her mouth and lips look beautiful. When I first looked at my copy from up close I was a bit surprised though, I don't remember Jason looking so...yandere? After some quick research on here and a few other sites, it seems like my Jason has a defect. You can a bit of the sculpt in the top white part of her eye, which was supposed to get some extra eyelash. This part was forgotten in the manufacturing of my copy and this was not seen by the quality control. Thus, leaving me with a very unique Jason! Until I researched this, I actually thought it was supposed to look like this, so it's not that bothersome of a defect to me. It's unique though! So keep that in mind when you read and look at the pictures in this review, I have found no other people on the internet having the same or similar with their copy.

Igoring the unique situation with the eye, which will vary with each collector if they like it or not, the rest of the face is close to perfection. There is nice shading in skin tones and the hair also has some interesting color fade effects.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270734.jpeg

You can get a small glance of her left eye under the mask and it seems like that eye has the same going on with the incorrectly placed decal. I think the person applying those decals did not look at the reference sheet too much and thought this was the way the figure was supposed to be.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270735.jpeg

The hockey mask is really well done. There is lots of shading and a really good sculpt. I can only nitpick some of the shading on the bottom being a bit blotchy.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270736.jpeg

The placement of the mask pushes a bit of her hair from her face. This means that on the left side, we can see her ear. The ear is actually quite big, which is a bit surprising! The sculpt of the ear and the pushed away hair wefts look nice.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270737.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270738.jpeg

I was a bit worried for the smaller details such as the buckles of the mask not being detailed properly. Luckily this is nicely done on my copy.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270739.jpeg

Something to remind us that this is an 'anime version' design, is the very huge cowlick (ahoge) in Jason her hair. The way it's applied looks a bit weird from the top, but is not too bothersome when viewed from normal angles.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270740.jpeg

Moving a bit down from her face, you get a view of her amazing body right away. The outfit and character designs in the Horror Bishoujo line so far are really sexy, without making it too tacky. Jason really looks like she was doing her 'work', instead of just being a pretty model in cosplay.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270741.jpeg

Jason has quite a big chest size and I am very happy to see both her breasts were sculpted individually. Even with some more recent figures I have seen some strange examples of breasts looking 'melted' together. It's pretty clear that Jason is also not really the type to wear a bra.

There is some nice shading on both the top and the breasts.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270742.jpeg

Jason is a very strong guy and we see that also in this female version. I'm really glad they didn't skip on giving her some 'killer' ha ha abs.

I don't remember Jason getting specifically these cuts in the Freddy vs. Jason or another one of his movies, so they could be artistic liberty in the design.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270743.jpeg

I was happily surprised to see such an extensive sculpt and paint shades on her arm.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270744.jpeg

On both hands Jason wears black gloves. These gloves have some nice details, including some sewn lines.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270746.jpeg

The machete is simple in sculpt, but has some nice paint to make it look like it has sharp edges.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270745.jpeg

The top of the machete has some blood splatters, which are an applied decal. It looks a bit 'fake' because of this reason, I have seen this issue similar on a lot of other figures as well, the first one coming in mind being my Bubble Head Nurse Figma ITEM #198486 / BLOG #42598 .

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270747.jpeg

In her right hand, Jason holds the axe. The small paint defects on the hand you see were caused by me, as earlier mentioned in the part about the assembly. The wood-grain effect of the axe is nicely done, especially if you compare it to the joke of an wood grain effect I recently saw on my Hikari ITEM #520672 / BLOG #42671 figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270749.jpeg

I like how you can see her knuckles through the gloves.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270750.jpeg

The axe itself is a bit simple, but does it's work well.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270751.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270752.jpeg

Jason her coat is pretty amazing. Lots of sculpted details with tattered parts, lots of shades and many wrinkles and movement going on here! I like how some smaller details, such as the coat pockets at the bottom, are present as well.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270753.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270754.jpeg

The collar of Jason's coat looks surprisingly better than a lot of newer figures I have, including the newer Horror Bishoujo Ash Williams ITEM #600025 / BLOG #42715 .

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270755.jpeg

Her belt is nicely detailed as well and even has some sculpted holes for the buckle pin. I only have a small nitpick of a seamline on the left side (her right) on both the belt and the pants.

The pants are an interesting mix between hot pants and actual jeans! I don't know what the idea of the actual design was, but it seems like she is wearing a pair of ripped jeans on top of a separate piece of hotpants.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270756.jpeg

The hotpants in combination with her cloak moving to the back, give you a good view of her assets! Her behind is nicely shaped and the sculpt of the tattered parts in the hotpants is really well done.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270757.jpeg

Especially from the side, you can see the nice round shape of her behind and the high amount of shading that was used to make it stand out even more.

The pants themselves are very good looking, there are many sculpted wrinkles in the skinny jeans.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270758.jpeg

A small detail on her left leg is that she has some cuts at one of the places where her jeans have a hole. This implies that Jason didn't just pick up some tattered jeans from the store, but they (partially?) got their damages from being used in action.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270759.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270760.jpeg

Jason her combat boots are a bit simple in sculpt and paint, but are looking good, especially the lacing.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270761.jpeg

The base feels very sturdy thanks to it's weight and the figure doesn't feel like it would fall over easily. This might be a good solution for all figures, we all know how easily pegs can break...

The very shiny and reflective green pool looks super cool. It really adds something to the figure, while still being very simple.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270762.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270763.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270765.jpeg

Jason is a very photogenic figure and I personally quite like how I ended up with her Yandere versionTM. She looks unique, although I would have like a 'regular' Jason as well.

The Points

Positive
- Great value for the MRSP price
- Very unique looking character design and figure
- Lots of high quality shading

Neutral
- Box is of lower quality than first run Kotobukiya Bishoujo figures

Negative
- Very hard to place axe in hand with risk of damaging the figure in the process.
- My specific copy of this figure has a big defect in her eye decal. The new look for her is quite interesting, but she's different from how Jason is supposed to be for sure!

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
Really good sculpt, lots of details, I especially like the coat.

Painting 9/10
The paint is near perfect. The only big thing to point out is the specific QC issue for my copy and the blood being decals is a bit debatable.

Posing 9/10
I really like this posing for Jason. A lot of male Jason collectibles have similar posing as well, and this posing manages to make it look sexy and strong at the same time.

Base 8/10
Very simple, but a nice idea and effect. Will magnets be the future instead of pegs?

Packaging 8/10
Very nice packaging design, but the cardboard seems to be a bit thinner than my other Kotobukiya Bishoujo.

Enjoyment 9/10
My pretty unique yandere Jason gives me a lot of enjoyment. By herself she is an amazing figure and displayed together with some other Horror Bishoujo she looks nice as well.

Conclusion

Very good sculpt and paint, especially considering the release price of this figure. If you're in general intrigued by her design and/or like horror characters, I really recommend this figure.

Availability

Most Kotobukiya Bishoujo shoot up in value on the aftermarket. For Jason this was the situation as well. Her re-release with an MRSP of ¥7,800 made the aftermarket prices for the first release drop a bit again, but now 2 years after the re-release and no information in sight if we ever get a 3rd release, this figure goes for whopping prices varying from ¥20K-¥30K. Crazy! She is an amazing figure, but it's really up to the collectors' budget and wishes if she would be worth so much for you. If you're not in a hurry getting her, I would recommend waiting a bit more to see if she gets a 3rd release, and if yes, pre-order her as fast as you can!

And to finish it!

I am currently still unboxing most of my collection after having them in storage for a while, but here is how she is displayed right now:

I'm not sure yet if I'm going to separately display my movie and game horror characters or keep them together.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/08/01/2270766.jpeg

Jason looks really nice when displayed with others from this line. Ash will probably continue to be my favorite in the line, but Jason also already has a special spot in my heart. Edward looks slightly out of place here, although the movie is one of my favorites and she doesn't deserve that. I will look for a better spot for her later.

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next blog is probably going to be a loot unboxing. I hope you're looking forward to it!

FrostyMcNugs22天前#80631701I got Jason from eBay. I asked them to send me additional pictures like a close-up of the face, the bottom of her shoes, and both sides of the base. It has a magnetic strip on the bottom instead of using pegs like the bootlegs and it looks good so I think it's legit! I'll inspect it more when it come in. It's a first edition and I got it for $65 + shipping!! No box but it comes with both weapons and no scuffs.
Yes, I got Ash! I got the Groovy version (hot topic/JP con exclusive bloody version) and my girlfriend got the regular one!! I havent watched the Evil Dead movies yet but I have watched all three seasons of Ash vs. Evil Dead!
If Jason is real, then I will finally have them all ^^ I just ordered Chucky and have Beetlejuice, Pennywise, and Leatherface on preorder :)

I'm also hoping the best for your Jason! Tbh I personally like the base of the re-issue more, but the first printing is more valuable and cool to own of course. 8)

Also nice! I think the Groovy version looks super cool except for one nitpick: I don't like how they skipped giving blood on her face...I understand that she needs to be a bishoujo, but look at how much blood there is! Her face needs to be bloody as well!

Ash vs Evil Dead does reference the movies a lot, especially the second one, so it's not 'needed' to watch them...however, they are so much fun! The second one is basically like the tv series and the third one is so out there absurdity, love it! The first one is the only 'odd one out' as the franchise started in a more serious tone. Still that one is nice as well, although a bit cheesy for nowadays standards.

Oh, that is so cool! I have doubted a lot of I want to go completionist on this series. I basically watched the movie(s) for everyone of them, but I am only buying the figures for my favorite ones (if they make a Xenomorph Bishoujo I will empty my savings LOL). I also got Pennywise on pre-order, I loved the original IT when I was a teen and I think the new reboot is cool as well. If these bishoujo were more affordable on the aftermarket I maybe would have picked up more, but eh, maybe someday I will have more disposable income to just splurge on them all. ;)

Cheap Jason...uh-oh. Where you got it from? The re-release can sometimes still be found for around retail price, but the original release is near impossible to find for a good price.
Are you also going to get Ash? She's my favorite in this line so far, definitely underappreciated compared to the rest (I wonder if Evil Dead in general is just less popular nowadays?).

Glassneaker10個月前#68059685Hey all! I loved this review and i was hoping to get some insight, I've been looking for Jason for a good while now and im curious as to why the price ranges in the 200 to 400 range. Was it a limited production? First in the line? Popular Char?
I can usually find the others, Edward, Freddy, Chucky, Tiffany,Pinhead, for around 80 to 170 with enough digging but Jason is a different story lol. Any Info would be much appreciated!

Hi! Thanks for enjoying the review! I'm sorry about the broken pictures, I'll be fixing them soon.

Most of the Kotobukiya Bishoujo get heavy price increases and there is no 'official' reason known about Jason her price increase. Personally I think it's because Jason vs. Freddy were the first in this line and Jason her design was way more popular, making her demand higher while Freddy was easier available. People seeing Freddy in stock at a lot more shops, made Jason even more desirable and it grew out of proportion from there.

It's the reason why I right away jumped on the re-release because I was expecting something similar to happen again... :T If you want an affordable copy you need to be really lucky with a second hand purchase nowadays.

Rajke1年前#64769597I am curious how Beetlejuice will turn out. It is definitely on the 'Must have' list. Yamashita does a really good job on this line and i think Beetlejuice is no exception. His designs are really interesting. :D

I think Beetlejuice is also the first one in this line to have a sitting position, which is nice when it comes to displaying a bunch of them together. :) I'm especially looking forward to how they will make the tombstone-base. Kotobukiya really outdid themselves with the base from Ash, so I hope they will make something awesome with Beetlejuice as well!

Yeah, I can't really dislike this defect, although it makes the figure very different from how it's supposed to be, haha!

Rajke1年前#64763809Great review. Jason looks great indeed. The shading is very nice done and honestly i like this horror line. At first i didn't notice the wrong placed eye decals but after looking carefully i see what you mean. Also i don't think she looks horrible. She either looks more surprised. Great figure. :D

Thanks for liking the review. :) I'm really enjoying this line as well and I'm happy that new releases keep on getting announced. Looking forward to Beetlejuice's prototype! :)

Yeah, I can't really dislike this defect, although it makes the figure very different from how it's supposed to be, haha!

victorviper1年前#64766753This figure has some interesting features I hadn't noticed before. The hockey mask holes in the box is a very interesting look, and her hot pants/jean shorts are almost like a mashup of hot pants, jeans, and chaps!
Also, the "unintentional yandereness" of your particular figure is not exactly out of character for the Jason character.
Do you have any plans to get the Freddy Krueger from this line?

Yeah, the pants really make me curious how she puts them on...hot pants first and then the rest on top...? ;)

I've never seen a defect like this before, but it's one that is not wrong for this figure indeed. :) Although I do like her actual face as well, but not enough to want to buy a second copy to put together/replace.

I think I will stay without Freddy unless I one day ever would decide to go completionist on this line. Freddy is actually the figure I like the least from what has been released in this line. With all the others I can see something of their movie counterparts and they have some imperfections and/or other characteristics showing, but with that Freddy...I just see a pretty model in Freddy-inspired cosplay. :(
