This is a review of a figure in an outfit that can be considered NSFW, and includes a lot of pantyshots!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263369.jpeg

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Shimakaze ENTRY #52214 together with Rensouhou-chan ENTRY #54095 from Kantai Collection ~Kan Colle~ ENTRY #52215 ! This figure ITEM #199562 is a prize figure made by Taito ENTRY #7694 .

Before I start with the actual review, I think it's important to mention that during the time this figure was released, Taito was known for making 'lesser quality prize figures'. It has only been because of the last few years, with especially a lot of nice Miku's getting released, that their quality seems to have been improving. Don't see the review below as a reason to avoid Taito! Instead, also take a look at blogs from their more recent figures, such as these two Miku's: BLOG #41075 and BLOG #39623 or my review of their more recently made Ro-500: BLOG #42028 . For this review, I will start off with telling some more about Shimakaze's background.

Background

Kantai Collection (translated 'Fleet Collection') is a browser game in which you have cute personifications of Warships to build a fleet with. As their commander, you 'collect' these girls and fight battles which are a combination of strategy and action. Kantai Collection became popular very fast and within 2 years of the game release, an anime was already getting made. As of now, Kantai Collection is still a huge multimedia project, with also games on other platforms, manga and light novels expanding the universe. More recently there has been some competition from 'Azur Lane'. Azur Lane is a very different game when it comes to gameplay, but it also uses warship personifications and has characters designed after the same ships as many Kantai Collection ones.

Shimakaze together with her Rensouhou-chan(s) is pretty much the 'mascot' of the franchise. She is based on the real Japanese destroyer Shimakaze ship from 1942 with the Rensouhou-chan(s) being the turret(s). Personality-wise Shimakaze is very outgoing, but she can be a bit of an airhead. When it comes to her ship-stats, she is mainly known for her extreme speed, just like the original Shimakaze boat.

The reason why and how I got her

I remember hearing some bad things about this figure and not being interested in her release in 2014 at first. Fast-forward a year later, and I am busy completing the figure set of the Lucky Star girls cosplaying as Kantai Collection characters. I find the last-missing ITEM #264881 on Mandarake, and to make the shipping costs more managable, I wanted to add another figure to the order. After some browsing I found this figure new and sealed in stock for 1500 yen and thought 'well, if this figure is indeed as bad as people have said, at least for 1500 yen you have a cool lifeguard-ring and big Rensouhou-chan! Worst case scenario, I can use her for practicing my GK painting skills or make a custom with her!". And now we are here today, where I am going to open this figure after being in storage for about 4 years, to see what my opinion of this figure is right now.

Original art

https://i.ibb.co/zhVnKKg/Shimakaze-Full.png

Although there is no 'official' reference artwork for this figure, we can at least be sure that her a bit 'empty' look is based on her official artwork shown above.

Video

For people that prefer the box shots, first look and first shots of the figure as a video, please take a look at the inserted video below. For the people interested in pictures: keep on scrolling!

Parts of this video will also appear as gifs during this review! And again the following notice: Multiple of my gifs were too big for resizing and I don't have the software in which I made these gifs anymore. This means you'll have to watch the video to see all the angles and poses animated!

The Box

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263370.jpeg

I was happily surprised to see that either Mandarake or the manufacturer had put some extra tape around the box to keep it more safe from damages.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263372.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263373.jpeg

The design of the box is very nicely done. It has a consistent design all over with high quality pictures of the prototype of this figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263374.jpeg

The top of the box is sealed off with three square tapes and a cute image of a lifeguard ring.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263375.jpeg

The inside of the box surprises us with some more cute images! These expressions of Rensouhou-chan.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263376.jpeg

The packing of the figure itself however, is the cheaper kind of packaging a lot of prize figures come with nowadays. Luckily the figure does not have any pieces that could easily break and this is safe enough.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263377.jpeg

This figure set comes with the following parts:
- Main Shimakaze figure
- Rensouhou-chan mini figure
- Lifeguard ring
- Base
- Two pegs for the base to keep the ring up.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263378.jpeg

I was a bit surprised at the 'view' Shimakaze gave me right away. The skirt is a separately sculpted piece and can freely move around.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263379.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263380.jpeg

There is a bit of assembly needed with the base, but it's not too complicated.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263381.jpeg

The stripes are painted decently, considering this is a cheap prize figure.

The main figure

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263385.jpeg

Seeing her for the first time left me with a bit of mixed feelings. I love the set-up of the figure and the very creative ring-base, but I think it was mainly her color palette throwing me off a bit.

Bonus figure: The Rensouhou-chan

https://i.ibb.co/TBKF9bG/shimakaze6.gif

This Shimakaze prize figure comes with a pretty big Rensouhou-chan!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263386.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263387.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263389.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263390.jpeg

Rensouhou-chan is really cute! You can already see a bit of defects on him, but considering the release price of this figure, it's not too bad.

There are some small let-downs in paint on the grey parts if you look at him from up close.

[img]static.myfigure...[/img

The painting on the lifeguard ring looks good except for the red paint splotch. As this is a prize figure, they come with lower QC and errors like this can be different on each copy.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263392.jpeg

I was surprised at how good the golden paint looks!

Shimakaze and Rensouhou-chan together!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263413.jpeg

According to the box you're supposed to put Rensouhou-chan separately in front of Shimakaze, but he also fits very well in her lap!

Looking at all the details

https://i.ibb.co/Ny47XR0/shimakaze3.gif

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263394.jpeg

Well...where to even start here. Although the sculpt of the figure looks quite decent, it seems like something went a bit wrong in the mold and/or there was not enough sanding done on the final product before they started painting. Surprisingly, there are a lot of shades of blonde mixed into Shimakaze's hair, so they did try to make something of it.

Shimakaze's eye decals are very accurate to the original design, but the rest of the face looks a bit 'off' compared to the prototype pictures. I think a lot of it can be blamed on her color palette, I think the color choice for the skin tone is weird.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263395.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263396.jpeg

When looked at from a distance, the shading in her hair looks interesting. I also like how the hair parts in half in the sculpt.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263397.jpeg

Shimakaze's headband has some nicely sculpted wrinkles, but I'm having some paint defects over here as well.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263398.jpeg

The anchor in Shimakaze's hair has more details in sculpt than I expected, but the paint looks a bit rushed.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263399.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263400.jpeg

The shading on Shimakaze's skin is in multiple places a bit strange, and looks yellow-ish.

I do have to say here that I really like in the sculpt of Shimakaze's breasts, as on quite some figures she is made fully flat.

The more I look at this figure, the more I see that the sculpt is actually pretty nice, but the paint job and finish are taking a lot of it down.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263401.jpeg

The gold of the buttons on her shirt are painted quite well and the sculpt of the top is also pretty good.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263402.jpeg

The gloves have a bit of wrinkles sculpted. The border at the top looks surprisingly good compared to the rest of the figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263403.jpeg

There was really a lot of attention given tot he sculpt of the skirt. As earlier mentioned, the skirt can be freely moved.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263405.jpeg

Even without moving the skirt, you get quite a view from her behind. There are some errors in both sculpt and paint here, with the worst offender being the difference in shading between the two legs.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263406.jpeg

Lifting the skirt up, you can see that even some love went into sculpting her...uh...how to say this decently in English...cleft?

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263407.jpeg

The panties are also completely accurately sculpted from the front and a very low type!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263408.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263409.jpeg

The paint on Shimakaze's striped socks is so-so. It's a hard detail to capture on a prize figure and I've seen pictures of other copies of this figure having it look worse actually. So over here it will really vary with each copy how good/bad it looks.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263411.jpeg

As I have also mentioned in earlier reviews of other Kantai Collection figures, I love the shoe designs of most characters and Shimakaze is no exception. Shimakaze's right shoe has a huge paint/sculpt defect at the heel...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263412.jpeg

...while her left shoe is near perfect! Luckily for me her normal display position is with the left shoe facing front.

The Points

Positive
- Nice box design.
- Rensouhou-chan mini figure.
- A nice base that can also be used with other figures.
- Easy to get high amount of fanservice if you want that

Neutral
- 'Bored' look in her eyes, which is true to the original design of the character, although it looks a bit strange here.
- Original sculpt is decent, it's mainly that in mass production execution was not done that well, such as the rough parts.

Negative
- Really low quality paint. Even though it's an older prize figure, this is not acceptable paint quality.
- Very bad QC, some of these Shimakaze's can look quite decent, others will be ridden with defects.

The Scores

Sculpting 7/10
I can see that quite some attention went into the sculpt for this prize figure, from the details in her skirt to the details in her shirt. It just seems like a lot of manufacturing problems in the final product made it's way in here.

Painting 4/10
The color palette is weird and there are so many defects in the paint that will vary with each copy. As someone that does customizing/model/garage kits myself, I get the urge to start repainting her right away! But I do have to give some credit, some details are applied nicely, such as the golden parts, and quite some effort was put in the shading of her hair.

Posing 7/10
Shimakaze's posing is pretty nice, I like the overall idea of her lounging in the lifeguard ring. I wish her expression was nailed better compared to the source material for it to fully work though.

Base 8/10
A very nice and unique base that might be the reason for someone to buy this figure!

Packaging 8/10
The packaging design is really cool and colorful, it would have been nice if there were actual blisters, but this is becoming less common with prize figures.

Bonus figure: The Rensouhou-chan 8/10
The Rensouhou-chan included with this figure is very nice! The paint is not perfect, but it's pretty good for a prize figure. The size of this Rensouhou-chan is also pretty big and he towers over my other Rensouhou-chans, including the Figma.

Enjoyment 7/10
I knew beforehand what I could expect from this figure, which is also one of the reasons why I'm writing this review, so others can see my specific copy. I knew I was getting a lower quality Shimakaze, but it would be a Shimakaze with quite an unique pose and base. She looks nice together with my other Kantai Collection collectibles, but she is not a centerpiece for sure. I might use the main figure for a custom someday, the ring for another figure and the Rensouhou-chan for a seperate display.

Conclusion

https://i.ibb.co/bLrdBpb/shimakaze4.gif

So yeah, how do I feel about this figure? I'm with a lot of mixed feelings. She was cheap, I knew I could not expect much, but it was still a wild ride to see this figure unboxed. Still, it's not like I wouldn't recommend her, you can buy her for a low price, even lower than what I paid originally, and for that you get you also get:
- A good looking Rensouhou-chan in decent size
- A pretty unique lifeguard ring-base that can also be used with other figures
- And if you're like me and also like model/garage kits and/or customizing, this really cheap Shimakaze is a good base!

She's a nice box/shipment filler, but definitly not worth to hunt seperately, unless you really want her base or the Rensouhou-chan.

Availability

When after release the news spread around quite fast that her quality was a lot lower than your average prize figure, her value dropped. Originally released for ¥1,5K, she now mostly sells for ¥1K and lower. A lot of people from the USA and Europe that sell her seem to price her $10-15 (or euro). She seems to still be widely in stock and also comes up a lot on secondhand selling websites. I think stores have a pretty rough time getting rid of these. Do you sometimes feel a bit bad about what happened to a figure? I really do here!

And to finish it!

I re-arranged my Kantai Collection figures and have decided for now that I want to make a ship-girls shelf and an Abyssal shelf, I have temporarily put my Lucky Star x Kantai Collection figures on another shelf as I'm not really sure yet how I want to display them.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263432.jpeg

I have decided to display this Shimakaze a bit more to the back, so that the attention rather goes to the overall figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/07/25/2263415.jpeg

Shimakaze and Ro-500 are made by the same manufacturer and released 1,5 years apart from eachother. The difference in quality between the two is unbelievable! You can check out some close-ups from Ro-500 here: BLOG #42028 .

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be about a figure that is very dear to me and I would like to give some attention: Griffon's Ink ITEM #3835 !

victorviper1年前#64411949It would be interesting to see a customization of this figure, but I guess the question is if it is worth the amount of time involved. A total sanding down of the figure would be needed to get rid of all the rough patches, and then the paintwork on her stockings seems like it would be tricky.
Taito does seem to be trending up in terms of quality, though. I just got ITEM #756832 and it's really nice!

When it comes to money, no. The "worth" will really depend on the person. So only if you really want to make something unique with this Shimakaze and/or have the skills to make her perfect, it could be "worth" is as a personal project. I'm still a bit in doubt what to do with mine, but for now I like her displayed like this with Ro 500. :)

I saw some user pictures of that Miku and she's indeed super nice! For me, this Taito Miku got a special place in my heart: ITEM #795826 . The shoes, the pose, the super cute face, argh! I have held myself together and not bought her (yet) as I first want to know if I have any shelf in my display where such a figure would fit.

Maakie1年前#64377789I'm curious if this figure were made now, if her 'bored' look could have looked better. I would love to see this expression executed well to let her look more like her original artwork than most other figures do.
I'm still thinking of customizing this figure, but I'm a bit scared with how rough some of the plastic looks, it will be hard to try to get everything smooth...hrmmm. :(
I really remember from my older reviews from Taito figures that the general mindset of most collectors was "Taito is one of the lesser quality manufacturers", it's amazing how much they have improved! They are especially booming with their adorable Miku line nowadays. :)

victorviper1年前#64352229- 'Bored' look in her eyes, which is true to the original design of the character, although it looks a bit strange here.
- Original sculpt is decent, it's mainly that in mass production execution was not done that well, such as the rough parts.
I think you've hit it on the head here. The concept of this figure is a good one (and the base design is actually quite clever), but in the end all the painting errors are just too much to overlook.
It's also interesting to see her next to Ro-500 to see how much better the figure could have turned out with a little better quality control!
