Kantai Collection ~Kan Colle~ Z3 Max Schultz SPM Figure by SEGAKantai Collection ~Kan Colle~ Z3 Max Schultz SPM Figure by SEGA

! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

The pantyshots in this review have been put in spoiler, so this is a sfw review!

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Z3 (Max Schultz) ENTRY #77766 from Kantai Collection ~Kan Colle~ ENTRY #52215 ! This figure ITEM #470986 is from the SPM Figure (Super Premium) line ENTRY #85669 made by SEGA ENTRY #7642 . This figure is the counterpart of the Z1 figure ITEM #470984 I reviewd BLOG #42166 a while ago. As I will reference to the other figure a lot during this review, I recommend reading that one first before getting to this one!

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Kantai Collection (translated 'Fleet Collection') is a browser game in which you have cute personifications of Warships to build a fleet with. As their commander, you 'collect' these girls and fight battles which are a combination of strategy and action. Kantai Collection became popular very fast and within 2 years of the game release, an anime was already getting made. As of now, Kantai Collection is still a huge multimedia project, with also games on other platforms, manga and light novels expanding the universe. More recently there has been some competition from 'Azur Lane'. Azur Lane is a very different game when it comes to gameplay, but it also uses warship personifications and has characters designed after the same ships as many Kantai Collection ones.

Z3, also known under the name Max Schultz, is the more girly half of the German Zerstörer (destroyer) girls and can be made in the game only with Z1 as the flagship, which shows their dependancy. She is also designed by the famous Shimada Humikane ENTRY #21456 , without his work in the past we probably wouldn't have seen an series like Kantai Collection to exist!

The reason why and how I got her

I got this figure as a gift with Secret Santa 2017 from GODYAGAMI ! You can see the rest of what I got for Secret Santa in this loot blog: BLOG #40999 .

There is no specific artwork this figure was modelled after, but the image coming most close, which we can also see on the figure box, is the official one above.

A nice quality box, especially for a prize figure, with a big picture of the figure at the front. The color scheme overall is very aesthetically pleasing.

The back of the box has a Kadokawa sticker of authenticity and a funny warning about the figure having pointy bits.

Instead of a seperate instruction paper, the back of the box has the assembly instructions printed. The sticker on the bottom right of the box is from the AmiAmi store where it was bought. It was in A/B condition although the box looks close to pristine and the figure is sealed.

I'm happy this figure comes in a decent blister, as nowadays it seems around 1 in 4 prize figures comes with them.

Just like Z1, Z3 comes with a base that also functions as a riser. Her right arm and the ship parts come in loose pieces.

I also liked the riser base with Z1, as it makes displaying these figures in a bigger collection easier. I do understand how people can dislike these kind of bases, if you don't want to have this figure on a riser, you just see a huge blue base.

I like the movement going on in this figure, especially with Z3 holding back her hat with her left hand and her hair moving along. The short dress with almost fully visible legs make for an interesting style.

Looking at all the details!

Something that really surprised me, but I'm very happy with, is that Z3's hair is semi-transparant. From a distance and in pictures, it rather looks like it has some shading, but this effect is all due to light coming through the hair.

I really like the shape and intenstity of the color of Z3's eyes. They stand out a lot in comparison to the color palette on the rest of the figure.

Compared to Z1, Z3's hat has a lot less defects, but as this is a prize figure, this is something that can be different with each copy of the figure.

From the side you can see the transparancy of the hair a bit better. She has quite some detailed ear sculpt as well.

Some pretty common prize figures defects are also visible in this shot: Seamlines that are not too bothersome, but would have been sanded away better if this had been a scaled figure.

When looked at from the side, you will see that the hand is not actually touching the hat. I assume if it were touching, there would be more risk of paint transfer. It's not too bothersome when viewed from normal angles.

I like the high-collared white shirt in the design of Z1 and Z3. The painting of the lines on the uniform is quite nicely done for a prize figure. Only when you get really up-close, like with my picture, you will see tiny errors like PVC leftovers and small paint chips or bleeds.

There are small seperately sculpted anchors at the bottom of the dress. There are some glue stains showing with their attachment.

Multiple paint scuffs are visible on the dress, which is acceptable for a prize figure, but I feel like I'm seeing a bit too much defects with this specific copy of the figure.

The hand-sculpt is slightly different from Z1, there are unfortunately also more seamlines than on Z1's hands.

The gun itself has a very impressive sculpt, which seems to be on par with some scaled figures from Kantai Collection! If it weren't for the lack of shading, you could think this sculpt was for a scaled figure instead.

There is more color in the ship parts of Z3's character design than Z1, so in general the ship parts are here more interesting to look at than on her counterpart.

With such a short dress, the panties can be peeked at when you view this figure a bit from below, but interestingly enough it does not give you an easy panty shot! Z3 wears the signature low-rise panties the character designer is known for.

The painting of Z3's shoes is a bit crude, my Z1's are better done. I do have to keep on repeating that this can vary with each copy of these figures, for example, someone else could get a pristine Z3 while their Z1 has a lot of similar errors to what shows in this review of my Z3. As they are prize figures, these kind of issues easier pass QC.

Anyhow, I do have to appreciate the shoe design again and I like the small details included such as the elastic border on the socks sculpted.

The base, love it or hate it. It holds the figure very well and feels very sturdy. Depending on your display, it can take away the need for risers.

Z1 and Z3 were released shortly after eachother and seem to be made with the idea in mind of being displayed together. However, there are no official images showing this, so you can debate which set-up is the best with the two of them.

At first I thought it would make the most sense if they were placed looking at eachother.

But after some switching around, this is really a better look! Now it's as if they were chasing an enemy together.

The Points

Positive
- Strong posing and expression
- Above average sculpt and paint for a prize figure
- Her base doubles as a riser which in my opinion is definitely a plus, although I can imagine people disliking it too

Neutral
- Quite some seamlines, pretty common for a prize figure.
- I was excited to have this figure displayed together with Z1, but they actually look less like a set than I expected, I was actually doubting how they should be put together!

Negative
- A bit more defects than I would like, especially when it comes to glue stains and paint scuffs.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
Even though some common defects from prize figures show in the sculpt, such as seamlines, I think SEGA really took an extra step with the huge amount of details in the ship parts. I think that the choice for transparant hair can also be added here into the score as something pretty 'extra' for a prize figure!

Painting 7/10
I wish I could have rated this a bit higher, but there are a bit too many scuffs and other common defects in the paint. It seems like this is a bit worse on Z3 than Z1, but this could be specifically for my copies of these figures.

Posing 8/10
Really nice posing, the slightly agitated expression and movement makes it look very interesting.

Base 8/10
Very basic, but it's a riser at the same time, which I personally really like as it saves me the hassle of actually having to place her on a riser!

Packaging 8/10
Holds the figure well and has a nice design.

Enjoyment 8/10
As Z1 and Z3 look a bit less like a pair than I expected, my enjoyment is a slightly bit lower than when I only had Z1. I guess I'm also less wow-ed by this figure as I now also knew what I could expect because of Z1 already being unboxed. Still, I really enjoy this figure. It's very good quality for the prize and looks nice in a Kantai Collection display!

Conclusion

A very nice prize figure, where you definitely get some good value for your money. She can also easily be displayed by herself, so it's not 'needed' that you also get the matching Z1. Z3 comes with a bit more defects than desirable, but as the design and sculpt is quite ambitious for a prize figure, this can be forgiven.

Availability

Z1 and Z3 flew quite under the radar when they were announced (I personally only found out after release that they existed). This figure can easily be found in stock at many second hand places for 1-2K yen. If you're into Kantai Collection, consider adding either of these to your order if you're already shopping somewhere!

And to finish it!

I re-arranged my Kantai Collection shelf a bit more and will soon make some more changes, here is how they are displayed for now:

I think I will later move them a bit more to the back and put my more detailed Kantai Collection figures to the front. Seeing them together displayed like that...it's interesting to me! Z1 is definitely my favorite in design of the two, but Z3 has the better pose of these figures. I can't pick a favorite!

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be about a cute and older Nendoroid that definitely needs your attention...the forever cute Ink-chan ITEM #901 !

I agree that it would be nice to see more riser bases, although the bright blue color of the base might be a little too bold. It kind of draws attention to the base as opposed to the figure itself.
