Halloween-chan is here - NOSTALGIA DRIVEHalloween-chan is here - NOSTALGIA DRIVE

(╭☞'ω')╭☞ NOSTALGIA DRIVE☜╮(´ิ∀´ิ☜╮)

Nostalgia Drive is a series of reviews looking over older figurines and how they hold up amidst the vast array of more recent cuties. In this series, I hope to bring back good old memories of our collective past and bring back in popularity old PVC goodness.

Hey! I'm BACK! I'm finally in a good enough physical state to start doing fun things again and what else for me to do but to look at a very old figure with my favorite people, you guys! I hope you'll like the changes that I decided to bring to the formatting of my reviews!

Let's go!

Original Character - Halloween-chan - Mon-sieur BOME Collection Number 4

Oh do I have a fantastic treat for you today (get it, Halloween, treat..? I'll see myself out). We'll be taking a look at Halloween-chan! Listed bellow are some facts and a 360 look at her.

Name: Halloween-Chan
Source: Original character
Illustrator: Ryo Ramiya
Sculptor: BOME
Producer: Kaiyodo
Release Date: 2005-01

What is the most interesting about this figure is that she was sculpted by BOME amidst his MON-SIEUR BOME Collection. It was a collaboration between BOME whom was still mainly producing garage kits by himself and Kaiyodo. They produced 41 figures within that series of blister pack bishoujos. Yeah you read that right, they are all packaged in gigantic blister packs. Keep in mind that each figure is of a roughly 1/8 scale which means that they are all around 15-20 cm in height! That makes for some gargantuan blister packs that can only be opened with scissors or an x-acto knife. They are the most difficult boxes to store properly because of their size. Fun fact, you have Kaikai Kiki Co. Ltd. to blame for these abominable packages!

Halloween-chan is an original character designed by Ryo Ramiya, a shoujo mangaka most well known throughout the 90's for her work, such as the manga and artbook "Luminous Girls". Halloween's design screams of late 90's shoujo. Her eyes and hair are particularly reminiscent of the period, boasting striking similarities to the art style of early Sailor Moon and even of the legendary work of Ikeda Riyoko(the mangaka responsible for the fantastic "The Rose of Versailles").

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Hoshiyo_Rina1534717757.jpeg

This figure is old. Just a glance at her can tell you that much. Beyond the dated art style, it is easy to see her age due to the numerous painting problems as well as numerous seams present on her body. From a distance, she doesn't look that awful but the moment you get close to her, they become overwhelmingly present. Then again, what can you expect from a 13 years old figure? Personally, it does not detract me that much from Halloween-chan's charm as a literal piece of the past and metaphorical time capsule of 90's manga culture... emphasis on "not that much". The quality of the paint is still fairly appalling.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Hoshiyo_Rina1534717779.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Hoshiyo_Rina1534717794.jpeg

Fortunately, The sculpting on this figure is fantastic for her age, compared to the paint job! Her hair is nice and detailed, more detailed in fact than some figures that came out just a couple years ago. BOME took the time to even sculpt out the back of her head as well as her horns and hands. I've reviewed a fairly recent figure made by COREPLAY that had worst much worse hands than Halloween-chan.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Hoshiyo_Rina1534717808.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Hoshiyo_Rina1534717788.jpeg

Halloween-chan has two very Halloween-like accessories with her. She is holding an adorable little pumpkin friend in her left hand and a stereotypical demon pitchfork. The pitchfork is fine but simply looks strange since you can't really see the prongs on it from most angles. The pumpkin, on the other hand, is simply adorable! I love this little guy!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Hoshiyo_Rina1534717799.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Hoshiyo_Rina1534717804.jpeg

What scares me the most about this figure is her anchor point to her base. While the base itself is sturdy, she only has a plastic point stuck in her back. This means that she wobbles uncontrollably at any tremors. She has never gotten off her peg so far but I fear that, in time, it will snap. Speaking of her base, it's fairly simple. A truncated cylinder with a summoning circle decal reminiscent of the ones from "Full Metal Alchemist" on top of it. For how simple it is, I still like it. The 6 pronged star and mystical looking writing look fantastic for such an old decal. The base makes it seem as if Halloween-chan sprung out of the summoning circle, ready to cause havoc through her mischievous tricks.

Now a couple of details I wanted to talk about before we wrap things up. She actually has transparent beads in her hair as hair ties. Made me think of those cheap beads I would make ugly necklaces and bracelets out of as a kid. Her boots are nicely detailed for the time. Her tail is really solid despite being so thin. Her wings are super cute! They seem completely black but they actually have a slight blue tint at the edges that give them a lot more dimension.

Final Thoughts

Halloween-chan didn't age very well. While she has her charms as a window into 90's shoujo and manga styles, she also has terrible paint problems. Fortunately her sculpt is great for her age. Not quite as fortunate is her packaging which is a nightmare to store. All in all, for a 13 years old figure, she doesn't hold up as well as I imagined she would. Also, for some reason, she attracts dirt like crazy. I had to dust her twice while taking her pictures. I don't know if its the material or something but dirt just loves her!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Hoshiyo_Rina1534717755.jpeg

In the end, I still like her but she is not my favorite nostalgic figure. I actually received a certain amount of MON-SIEUR BOME collection figures and I'm hoping that they'll hold up better than Halloween-chan.

View spoilerHide spoilerFor those not in the know, I was plagued by a severe neck and shoulder injury that was theorized to be a cervical hyperlordosis. I went through a lot of physiotherapy to fix it up. My neck is cured, which is fantastic, but my shoulder is still in a lot of pain. It seems that there are some muscular knots surrendering the median nerve (that's the nerve that goes from your neck to your fingers) which causes nervous pain all through my arm. This is why typing has been really difficult. The pain is still there but it's less intense now. Hopefully I'll be able to get it all fixed up but... I don't have the money to actually pay for more physiotherapy... *sigh* I'll find a way to get fixed through the stretching exercises that were given to me by my therapist. In the meantime, please enjoy the reviews that I'll be able to put out!

sailormatlac (7個月前) #39046317Bome was so prolific back then. There was nothing he didn't touch in these days.
This is the kind of figure I'm always curious to see how they would look if someone repaired the seamlines and repainted it with a quality paint job. Pretty sure some people probably did this with affordable old figures.
Thanks for sharing again some sweet oldies!

You know, if I find another one on the preowned market, I will try to get it sent to my friend that is a figure painting genius for repairs! That would be such an interesting experiment!

Thank you for the kind words! I love sharing the old part of this hobby to more and more people! <3

victorviper (8個月前) #38932957Considering how cheap they were (and still are), they are not bad figures. They are comparable in quality to a lot of modern prize figures, but at the time they were made, they were not really bad at all particularly considering their low price.
I always found it neat that this line had a fair number of original characters, which is something you almost never see with comparably-priced figures these days.

Most BOME are no more than 3000 yen depending on where you look so I'm getting a little addicted to getting the original characters figures he made! Original characters are being snubbed by the affordable companies, that's for sure. I wish there were more since they always end up being very distinct and interesting to look at.

Cantisama (8個月前) #38976542I have the FMP Mon-sieur BOME figures ITEM #249 and ITEM #2914. Their packaging was indeed a bitch to open. They also used tight twist ties which dug into the figure a bit. I still consider them the best Chidori and Tessa figures available... most other manufacturers are hell-bent on releasing them in some form of undress.
There are a lot better Halloween figures these days, but at the time, Halloween-chan may have been a good choice for fans of the holiday.

I love Halloween so bring all the spooky cuties! But in all seriousness, it is a trend lately. That and kimono figures.

And YES OMG it took way too long to get her out of that blister prison and I ended up looking a bit dumb on my Twitch stream since I was unboxing her at that time hahahaha

ilasja (8個月前) #39008962I'd love to get the GK version of her, the PVC version is cute and all but she's super small and I don't care for the pink hair. Trouble is hunting it down
Thanks for reviewing, I appreciate reviews for older figures a lot since they can be riddled with issues. I also just love their aesthetic/style, so finding a nice, older figure like this one to add to my wishlist is fun

Well if you have a love for old PVC cuties, I suggest that you keep an eye on my work as it is all about honoring them! I'm glad that she's getting a bit of love because, honestly, despite her problems, I still like her a whole lot! And she's super cheap on the aftermarket!! If anything, you could find a regular one and recolor it for the effect that you want.

If it's any help, I found some BOME GK on Suruga-ya yesterday. Not sure if Halloween-chan is one of them or if they are still there but yeah. I think you should check it out once in a while!

Even though there are better Halloween figures out there, the fact that Halloween-chan was (and is!) so inexpensive makes her a decent option for a Halloween display. I got mine from AmiAmi a while back for only 1000 yen.

It hadn't dawned on me that there are pretty much no non-fanservice figures of Tessa out there save for the Bome one, but you're correct! However, it seems to me that the Tessa/Kaname pair is one of the tougher Bome offerings to find nowadays.

Hoshiyo_Rina (8個月前) #38933046I fell in love with them as well! I have tons to unbox on my next stream actually if you want to see more of them "almost in person". My other BOME figures look a lot better in terms of paint job so I'm confident that they'll look fantastic

Oh cool! I'll have to check out your stream, I'd love to see more of them.

Oh absolutely, and I love all the original characters in the line. They look great! It's just the edges on her outfit that would drive me nuts way up close.
