Notes on my Mandarake experienceNotes on my Mandarake experience

evenstar88evenstar882個月前Diary
***This serves as a personal note to myself so I can come back and check on certain stores.***

So I have been a collector a year past now, and Mandarake is my go-to site for many of my figures. They are a good place to get older figures and at pretty good prices too if you are lucky (though figure prices are on the rise nowadays). The service is prompt (confirmation emails are usually received 24-48 hours), and their goods-rating is apparently excellent - where the Japanese grade the box as 'damaged' usually translates into a microscopical fold over the top of the box or an insignificant crease somewhere.

Though I personally think their QC has been on the downward slide recently. I never had any problems with my ordered items last year, but have received items with unexpected, unmentioned major defects thrice this year so far (though Mandarake has been gracious enough to respond).

I have ordered with pretty much all of the branch stores, except Utsunomiya probably.

SAHRA
My first ever purchase was from this branch, and I remember the ease in which I had placed my order. The confirmation was prompt (as they are the main warehouse and provide you the transport fees on the spot when you make the order - which is a plus).

NAKANO
This is also a good branch, they have really good prices and pretty much all my orders were smooth.

UMEDA
Good branch and fast efficient service - and the one I have made the most orders with. I received a defected item from them earlier this year, but they responded quickly and sent over a replacement part - which is what I really appreciate more than refunds.

SHIBUYA
Cancelled once with them as I faced a sudden credit card problem and they let me off with a reprimand - very thankful for not getting the blacklist.

COMPLEX (AKIHABARA)
Not one of the better branches, in my opinion. I received a damaged figure from them this year, and they took more than a week to respond (only after I had sent a second email) and offered a small refund. When I tried to use the refund on a new order, they cancelled that order. If I finally manage to use that small credit, I don't think I would choose to order with them again, unless they happen to have a figure I really want where no other stores can provide.

GRANDCHAOS
One order with them before, and all good.

KOKURA
This branch has shipping prices which are strangely teeny bit higher than the usual (when you have made enough orders, you learn to predict the fees with the weight). I have had two orders with higher prices than what I would get with other branches. Maybe due to overpacking... but I am not sure...
Also received one defected item from them this year, but their response was fast and efficient.

SAPPORO
Done a single order with them before, and payment and shipping was smooth without hassle.

NAGOYA
Smooth order, no fuss with this branch too.

Overall, my orders mostly come from Nakano and Umeda. I highly recommend these two branch stores - very prompt with good prices, and if you run into trouble (especially important), they help you out with everything they can.

Still going to continue ordering from Mandarake for sure, it is by far the best place to get figures for me (I have only meddled with Plamoya sometimes, and strangely have never ordered from Amiami before).

On a funny note, I have been to Japan twice now but was not into figure-collecting then or even knew what Mandarake was - and I believe I have walked past their store before and sometimes I beat myself up for being so slow to catch on to this hobby.
Oh well, here's to visiting Mandarake in the flesh someday.

nyugvo6 (2個月前) #38574288kokura overcharged me as well. I asked them about it, and now they owe me 1800 yen.
which of course I can use to pay for another overcharged order! haha. ha. ha.

Ah, I knew I wasn't the only one! They gave me store credit for a defected item as well, and I don't know when I will order again from them XD

isbergues (2個月前) #38573662the only time ive ever had a problem with mandarake was with their utsunomiya store. they sent me the wrong item, and even though i contacted them twice over the course of 2 weeks, i never got any response. it was only a loss of about $25, but still really irritating.
Oh dear, that's terrible. Did you direct email to that particular branch? I have seen a lot of people encouraging use of the international mandarake email address for English emails but I personally feel it would slow down the process. Twice I received defected items and twice I emailed the branch Mandarake shop involved, and received responses for both.
And the email has to be sent within a week of receiving the items, according to the rules I remembered reading.

Happy to provide the input, and good luck with your order!

I'm also an indiscriminate buyer, but it's really interesting to see your experiences laid out like this!

I went by myself to explore Nakano Broadway and Akihabara and I will say that the trip was the start of my figure collecting. All the Mandarake stuff in Nakano is super cool.

solluxcaptor (2個月前) #38569523Interesting! I don't usually rank my experiences by branch because I buy indiscriminately but I'll try and add some insight of my own.
Don't we all? :)

SAHRA
Fast and efficient but sometimes automatically calculates the weight a bit higher than getting it calculated manually at a store. If you want to guarantee that the item is yours and know the shipping cost immediately it's a great option though.
This is the only branch I have ever had to cancel an order from. I tried to order 2 plushies and 2 manga once and it wouldn't give me an automatically calculated price, I thought it was a weird error and submitted anyway, they came back to me later with an extremely unexpected 7,000 yen shipping fee. From this lesson I learnt that if SAHRA won't automatically calculate your shipping cost - ABORT MISSION (or at least expect a very high shipping price)
Ikebukuro / Shibuya
Generally responds quickly! These are good stores that I buy from super regularly but I don't have too much to say about them. Stock a lot of smaller goods especially otome goods.
Nakano / Complex
Great stock and pretty fast at responding to orders as I remember. They have a lot of figure stock.
There is one store I usually have to wait a while to get a response from and I think it might be Umeda... but I don't want to pin the blame on any branches unnecessarily and to be honest I don't mind waiting. The items are typically in stock and that's all that matters to me.

Thanks for sharing about the experience with Sahra, will keep a note on that. I have only ordered with them once but that's everything to do with the figure availability.

And I agree about Nakano having a huge stock of figures.
